Tom GIDLEY - Artist in residence, September, 2014

My work has two main threads; making art, and writing fiction. My studio practice centres around painting people and making objects, usually ceramics, and these things are often shown in combination. The theme of my painting is psychological portraiture; the subject is always being reduced, fragmented, abstracted and often overtaken by decoration – the pattern of their clothing or the landscape around them. I photograph people for my painting and sometimes work with these photographs directly. My objects act as punctuation points, thought bubbles, totems or abstract faces; they’re uncanny, vaguely familiar forms, open to interpretation. All the things I make are in conversation with each other, a dialogue I am adding to all the time. My writing could also be described as psychological portraiture. At the moment I am editing a second novel, Peasouper, which I have been working on for several years.
